Our resident consultant AJ Hunter has many years experience in motion pictures, digital and electronic special effects, 3D animation, network television, video, print media and web design. He is also a qualified lecturer in graphics arts, 3D animation, video, audio and digital photography and was employed in this role at UCOL for 5 years.

Logo Design
This is an example of a bitmapped logo for a fictional Antarctic company, used in a short film. It was created from scratch in Photoshop using a reproduction of a map projection and overlaid text.
Logo using photography
Simply Seaweed is a Wairarapa fertiliser company. The business card design at the left was derived from high resolution underwater kelp photography and then overlaid with Photoshop text and graphics. Although it is based on a photo and therefore still a bitmap image, the 300 DPI (dots per inch) resolution is suitable for most applications. By comparison the internet is all 72 DPI and the front cover of a glossy magazine is usually 300 DPI.
Big Redz Bus Company Logo
Big Redz Bus Company is a transportation company covering the lower North Island. I designed their logo entirely using vector graphics, as it needed to be reproduced on a variety of materials. The linked image is a PDF file, so you can see an approximation of the sharp image possible at any scale using vector graphics.
Carterton District Council camping flyer
This flyer was created from information supplied as a text document by the CDC. I supplied the photography, and created the maps, diagrams,etc. The larger image links to a jpeg copy of both sides of the flyer shown to the left. Here is a link to high resolution artwork was actually supplied to the CDC in PDF format.
CDC Fundraiser Certificates
These certificates were issued by the Carterton District Council. They were designed to be printed on high quality card. The imagery used is a mixture of my own designs and traditional certificate themes- Confederate money, Celtic scrollwork, art nouveau and an ancient flower sketch book.
RFID Conference DVD insert
I video taped the Wairarapa RFID radio tags conference and then distributed copies of the final edit on DVD. The jewel box label is designed to be folded down the middle. The company logos were supplied by the client, and I created all the rest of the artwork and wrote the text. We printed the inserts in-house.
Ron Mark DVD label
This DVD was distributed during the 2010 local government campaign. The picture is from a photo shoot I did with the candidate. All DVDs supplied to clients by EnZedPCs are on printable DVD media. We can print our own DVD labels in-house. We occasionally do print runs of up to 100 copies of a DVD.
GRAFIA Blues Project poster
The GRAFIA Blues project is a Wairarapa Rock/Blues collective with an ever-changing membership. I designed all of their posters, and they were printed out of house on A2, A3 and A4 card or glossy paoer. The imagery is Photoshopped out of several very old black and white photos. The GRAFIA logo was supplied by the client, and then adapted for poster purposes.
About these designs: the tech details
What you see above was created with Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya 3D and pen and pencil. Imagery was culled from a variety of sources - public domain image collections on the internet, or my own photography. I use a Canon EOS 450D camera.

Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is tool of choice for most graphics design work. Most printing firms are happy to use Photoshop PSD files for the majority of print jobs.
Resolution (DPI)
This is usually specified in Dots Per Inch. The closer the dota are together, the higher the resolution. Newspaper pictures and magazine images are made of variably spaced discretely coloured dots. The human eye fuses them together into a continuous coloured image.
Bitmapped and Vector graphics
Photoshop files are bitmapped or "raster" graphics, like photographs. They go fuzzy at the edges if you enlarge them.
Vector graphics are created when the final image needs to be used at a variety of different scales, from skyscraper high, down to postage stamp. A vector graphic image has sharp edges at any scale. They are commonly produced using Adobe Illustrator. We will advise you what file types to use.
PDF Files
PDF is a filetype. Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open standard for document exchange, which means that PDF's can be viewed on any computer regardless of what computer application software, hardware, and operating system the viewer is using.
