Is your computer slow?
Do some programs take AGES to open? People often mistakenly think this is a symptom that their computer is wearing out, but this is rarely the case. A much more common reason is that the computer is being slowed down by file corruptions, malware, scareware and accumulated operating system faults.
If you bought a computer a couple of years ago and it seems to be getting slower, or needs to have software or antivirus protection upgraded, you may need a PC Service Check. If it is a tower or a desktop unit, we will also dust it out using a compressor, as dust makes the fans cooling your system less efficient.
We check the random access memory (RAM). RAM amounts that were fine a few years ago may be inadequate now and installing more RAM can increase speed dramatically. We also scan your system for unnecessary files and remove them, because they take up space and further reduce your computer's speed.
Does your computer do unexpected things?
Does the disk activity light come on for no reason? Does the modem show a huge amount of mystery traffic, even when you're not doing anything? Have new website link icons appeared on your desktop? Has your home page been changed without your knowledge? Do some programs (especially Windows Update and anti-viral software) refuse to run? You've probably got a virus.
Antivirus and spyware protection are important issues. We recommend Trend Micro Internet Security but will install free solutions if we feel they are suitable. Windows updates that are not current leave vulnerabilities in the system, or result in incorrect settings. We therefore bring them up to date.
Does your computer refuse to do some things?
We also often find that the PC does not have the correct program set up to open email attachments, so we install a set of free software and add-ons, giving the ability to access those files.
Do strange messages pop up?
Do you see messages in your system tray warning you that your computer is infected with malware, and telling you to download some anti-viral program you've never heard of? Do you get frequent Blue Screens of Death?
